It was a horrific experience at Sunrise of Golden Valley! I would not recommend it to anyone...ever!! I would not recommend anyone put a family member at this facility. In the 6 months our parents were there, my mother who needed the cares, did not receive the cares they were paying for and in her care plan. We worked with an Ombudsman and the Minnesota Department of Health to work with the facility to remedy issues, however, things only got worse not better. Some of the specific issues that my mom experienced was excessively long wait times for response times on button pushes was 2-5 hours, which included toileting, getting out of bed in the morning and getting dressed). For 4 months, she was not given a shower. They said she declined them but I and other siblings were present and they would always say we will do it tonight or tomorrow morning, and it never happened. We had to wash her ourselves. Prescriptions not ordered or administered for 7 days after being prescribed by her doctor. Missed medication and nebulizer treatments regularly. Injuries due to staff not trained on transfers. Staff untrained and unwilling to use the hoyer lift even though it was in her care plan. Based on our complaints to the Minnesota Department of Health, they did a surprise inspection and they had an 88 page report of violations.

Response from Sunrise of Golden Valley
August 21, 2023Hi, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Golden Valley and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
Cleanliness gets less than a one, it was disgusting. It is easy to be friendly if you do not do any work. Care gets less than a one, my loved one did not receive good care here. He was left everyday with poop under his fingernails and all over his clothes. Too many foods served were spicy. He was never encouraged to leave his room. No one explained this was self-pay only. No one explains anything. The billing system was horrible. Others looking should know the clothes only get changed once a week. The room and bathroom only get cleaned once a week. They should also know there is no social worker there. They should know the workers just play on their phones. My mom was a nervous wreck and my dad deserved better care.

Response from Sunrise of Golden Valley
August 9, 2023Hi Brenda, We take your experience at Sunrise of Golden Valley very seriously and would like to review this matter closer. Please contact info@sunriseseniorliving.com so we can promptly review and address these concerns. – The Sunrise Team
Regarding staff friendliness, this varied widely among the staff. The spectrum was broad with some being lovely, kind and very helpful while others were almost rude and appeared lazy and unwilling to do much beyond the bare minimum. Many things had to be requested several times before they were done and did not ever seem to become something that would then happen as a matter of course. I did not think we were very demanding or asked for anything out of the ordinary but care and standard tasks would be inconsistent or overlooked altogether. Overall, this respite stay served a purpose for a short time and my father was safe and basically looked after. We had a caregiver who had helped my parents over the last year come in to help on most days and without her supplementing the care and attention my dad received, I don't think it was adequate, and certainly not relative to the cost. There is also very little feedback given or two way dialogue about the resident between Sunrise and myself. This would be very helpful. Again, our own caregiver was able to update us on how my dad was doing, but without her, we would have been entirely in the dark.

I like it, and would recommend. I like the large tv room with comfortable chairs where my dad hangs out with everyone. His floor also has little areas that make it feel like a community. The business end of the company is lacking!

They had a very high turnover rate. There was no consistency. Rather than hrr we lo her when she was upset they sent her in an ambulance to a hospital 30 miles away instead of the one with the psych ward nearby.

They do everything well except for coordinating communication between a resident and their family member when family is away. Residents should always have an outside family member who pays attention and advocates for them. We picked this community because, it was a homelike feel, friendly people, resident pets, high quality staff and care team, positive activities, movies and concerts.

August 26, 2022Hi GB, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Golden Valley and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
Our family had an in person tour and Sunrise is a beautiful beautiful facility, and the location was very convenient for us. They had a lot of different floor plans and options to choose from. However due to our loved ones health state they would not be able to take advantage of all the amenities so in the long run it was not going to be the best fit.

August 22, 2022Hi Customer, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Golden Valley and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
I feel as though Sunrise is a place you'd feel good about putting someone you really love in. You will know that they'll be cared for, well fed, and they'll be happy there -and that's really hard when you put someone in a lockdown community. As a whole, they are pretty good at communication. But, for instance, last week they said my mom was acting different so they wanted to run a urine test as she might have had a bladder infection. The day they were supposed to get back to me they never called. I called and never got in touch with someone who knew the results, so I'm assuming it was negative as I'm sure they would have told me if it was not. But, I really didn't like that and I felt that they could've done better. They have a great activities director and some of their activities include a lot of bingo, they'll take them on walks around the building, and there's a secure area in the back of the building for the residents to wander without getting out. They have a machine that plays old tunes and they'll sing along to those, and they do their nails which I think is pretty cool. The person in charge will go around and they'll pick out colors, and I think that's a really nice feature that they do. They also have field trips like Sunday scenic drives, and they've seen a couple movies. They were supposed to go to a Twins game, but I believe it was too hot outside. They were supposed to go fishing that same week as well, but they couldn't because it was still too hot out. Those are some of the fun things they get to do there. I would recommend Sunrise of Golden Valley to others.

Great place but we wanted a location in Wisconsin.
Helpful, answered a lot of questions.
The staff is very caring. All of the staff that I met were really friendly people. It's clean. And the security on the memory care unit is good. It was nice that I could take our dog in for a visit to see Mom.

I would tell others when they are seeking a place, make sure that the employees are trained and know what they are doing. My loved one is not getting good care and when you complain it seems to get worse. I would not recommend to other families who are looking.

Response from Sunrise of Golden Valley
October 8, 2021Resident care is always a priority at Sunrise of Golden Valley. For nearly 40 years, our Company has had the privilege to take care of thousands of senior residents who have made Sunrise Senior Living their loving and happy home. It’s disappointing whenever we learn that a family member or resident did not enjoy their experience at Sunrise. One dissatisfied member of our community is one too many. Please contact us at information@sunriseseniorliving.com so that we can learn more. Thank you.
This place is terrible. My mother had Dementia and lived at Sunrise Golden Valley for a few months. My mother had very typical behaviors of someone suffering from Dementia. When I met with the leasing agent, I was very specific with her behaviors and what she needed in terms of care. He told me there would be no problems and they were "experts" in dealing with her situation. They ultimately called the police on my mom and kicked her out of the facility due to her normal dementia behaviors. Do not put yourself in the same situation. Seek another facility!

We toured Sunrise and I just didn't feel that it was appropriate for my dad, I just had a feeling. But the staff were very nice
Very warm friendly place. Got that feels that this is the right place for my Mom. Staff interactions with resident was kind, caring, respectful. Lunch looked and smelled good. They offer many different spacious floor plans. Looking forward to getting Mom settled in.

We toured the community and the tour was very positive and very comprehensive. The staff was very engaging and friendly. we based our decision on price, location, and the care offered.
