Look at all facilities first

My mother has been at this facility for a little over a year. The staff such as the CNAs and maintenance are wonderful and caring. While I agree that the place is well maintained and very clean I have many concerns for a vulnerable senior that cannot advocate for themselves. Examples that we have encountered are: 1. Two falls that resulted in long response times. In one of the falls my mom remained on the floor w a fractured arm for over 35 mins with no response despite her call bell being activated. She called me at home to tell me that had fallen and needed help getting up. Second fall w no injury with lengthened response time because of an issue w a call bell system. 2. One incidence of the staff giving her another patients medicine because they threw hers away in error. My mom told them it was not her medication and called me. 3. During this COVID pandemic I personally noted a staff member wheeling a pt in the facility with no mask as well as the pt. When I called to discuss they tried to deny it but it was witnessed by another staff member. Once I called it to the persons attention they apologized. On sev occasions I note residents walking the facility w no mask. The response is that trying to get them to wear masks is very difficult. 4. Multiple communication issues w the staff that require me to follow up consistently. My mother was a DNR when she went into the facility which was discussed on arrival. I found out this past week that the paperwork was never signed. It took me several requests to get it done. 5. Long response for answering call bells and requests for pain meds. mother stated there is just not enough help when she needs it and food is a consistent complaint. 7. When my mom moved in they never disclosed they have a catered living rate that is 1000.00 less. My mom found out about it from other residents. When I requested the rate she was given the rate but I felt it was very underhanded not to discuss this or offer it at her entrance. I called the State and had a meeting with the facility sev months ago. Things change for a few weeks and go back to normal. I get tired of the inconsistency. My mom does not want to leave because of her friends. I can’t relax or feel comfortable she is taken care of. I have to follow up on practically everything.

Happily surpised

My mother is very happy here. The staff is very responsive to the residents and the family. If there is anything I need to bring to my mother, they are happy to accommodate. They are all very friendly. They know all the residents personally and are very attentive to the needs of the residents. They are very respectful as well. They also make sure to get to know the residents personally. Normally, they do have actives available for the memory care residents that are specific to accommodating with difficulties relating to memory loss, but they would be willing to accommodate for whatever the resident's preferences are. The food is good and well balanced, my mother has never complained.

Look elsewhere

My grandmother is a resident at St. Gabriel's in Murrells Inlet, SC. We have brought our concerns to their staff and management numerous times, and each time we are "yessed" and things are ok for a few days. Then things go back to uncaring and neglectful. Here is a partial list of our concerns: 1. Resident was prescribed a pureed diet by a doctor. She ONLY receives broth on a daily basis....once in awhile they will give her pudding or applesauce. Her nutritional needs are not being met. 2. Resident needs assistance walking, even short distances like from her bed/chair to her bathroom. Assistance is almost always severely delayed...often by 30-90 minutes. The facility claims their "response time" is under 10 minutes, but that time is the time it takes for an employee to come to the resident to ask what she needs and then that employee leaves to get the appropriate person to address the need. Resident's needs are not met for 30-90 minutes. 3. Due to Covid19 safeguards, the facility will not transport the resident to necessary medical appointments, yet they are allowing new residents to enter the facility.
