A Place for Mom
I had a wonderful experience using this service. My adviser listened to all my needs and set out setting up appointments for me to visit places that met my criteria. Both places were wonderful, but the one I selected just seemed to go the extra mile.

SARR-St. Albert Retirement Residence
I’ve lived in this building, St. Albert Retirement Residence or SARR for one year now. The building is new and well kept. The outings are okay but there needs to be more organized outings as every so often isn’t enough. The communication is beyond horrendous. I’m on med assist through homecare in the building and from day one it has been major confusion. The Dr visits are a joke as the wrong persons file is usually given to the Dr. by the RN...just to add more confusion for everyone. And then there is the food. The budget is majorly cut so the owner can make a bigger profit. There are no chefs. Grilled cheese sandwiches are made 1-2 hours in advance and are served cold and soggy. Yes, it’s true. Today we were lucky as we were served chicken noodle soup ice cold. Yay. They prepare early and put the soup in bowls that then sit 1-2 hours. The food is always bland, no variety and no taste. The staff are always confused, every staff member in every position. And the rent is extremely HIGH for the services they offer. That’s why there is empty available apartments.

We feel this is the place for my mother. The tour was incredible and [name removed] was so open and friendly that she earned our trust immediately. Now, the conversations start with my mom to even consider starting the transition process. It will take time

Could be improved
This review will focus on the assisted living accommodations for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients requiring the locked facilities - not the general assisted living. I will begin with the positive areas of the facility. It is a beautiful new building with the main open areas very well kept and clean. They are bright, music playing, and activities always ongoing and posted throughout the building. First and foremost, the front line health care staff are really great! Many are exceptional. They really work hard and care for their patients to the best of their ability. The problem, however, is there simply isn’t enough staff. There are only 2 HCAs for 18 patients. There is also an LPN, but that position works more than one floor and has a lot of administrative paper work to complete. The HCAs are also required to dish up meals, serve, and assist with feeding for those that require it. They are also required to do housekeeping for those patients with incontinence (for example) issues. Basically the two HCAs can only do so much with 18 patients and you can expect the care to be less. The issue is not the staff. The issue is management and budget. The home is owned by a family in Ontario and it is apparent that the bottom line is priority. Housekeeping is also short staffed. They only clean on the rooms specific assigned days. We often brought in our own supplies to clean the room. Maintenance is also short staffed and you can expect to wait a significant amount of time to have items fixed - we experienced delays related to safety and health concerns. If the company were to spend more money on operational areas such as meals, house cleaning, maintenance, etc., and allow their healthcare staff to focus on the the actual healthcare, this would be a much better facility. Again, kudos to the staff!

The senior in question enjoyed his stay. Said he had a great time, he joined in on activities and had fun doing them. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Was asked to come back soon as he was a part of the residence already. All in all he had a great stay
