Terrible, cruel, caregivers and owners
Both of my parents were under the care of [name removed]. We moved both of them to other places. They don't do any activities. The residents just sit in chairs all day. I had my dad removed from 9 out of the 17 meds they had him on within a week of moving him. They locked a resident with alzheimers in her room. The caregivers are just that-caregivers. Babysitters if you will. The are not trained to deal with dementia/alzheimers patients. They put them in chairs, drugged up and that is where they stay. Since moving my dad he has put on weight, Walks everywhere, he was confined to a wheelchair. Both parents are happy and doing very well. DON'T take your loved ones here.

Pam, I’m responding to your review and the false aquations you wrote regarding my staff, management and in general about our assistant living home. Although, I agree on two of your ratings. One you gave a 5/5 on the cleanliness of our homes. Which is true our homes are very clean. The second one is you gave us a 4/5 on friendliness. I believe as human beings we all have room to grow and improve. But I’m confused, you gave us a 4/5 on friendliness but in the review title you stated, “we were all terrible and cruel”. So, which one is it, are we friendly or terrible and cruel? I’m going to respond to all your ratings but before that lets talk about what when on before you moved your first loved one into our home. You called me up on the phone very upset how the home prior to moving into our home was treating your mom unprofessionally and messing up on her medication. I helped you step by step to move your dad into one of our homes without difficulty. Three months later you being the POA and your family were so happy with our care of your dad you moved your mom into our other home because we have three. They both stayed with us for two years. Any concerns or issues during those two years we being the managers and caregivers address them immediately. During the last couple months of your parents staying with us it was during Covid 19 time. You weren’t happy about wearing masks and us following the CDC guidelines and Maricopa department of health. Also, you weren’t nice to our staff. I will not apologize for looking out for our resident’s safety during that difficult time for all of us. You abruptly, moved both out without any reason why? We tried to contact you but you either wouldn’t respond or we got very short answers via text. We even got the Maricopa health department to come into are houses to administer the covid 19 vaccine for all residents including your mom and dad. During this Covid 19 time we only had two weeks where family were not aloud in because the percentage of spread was too high. Otherwise, you were able to visit your parents in their room or outside. As you were aware a lot of rehabs, hospital, or other healthcare facilities would not let you visit at all. You said we have no activities for our residents which is untrue. We play cards, board games, bingo, etc. We even had outside musical groups come in, but it all slowed down or stopped during Covid 19. You called our caregivers “Babysitters” which I think is so insulting not only to them but to us managers and your parents as well. If we were just babysitters a lot of families wouldn’t need are help. All managers and caregivers are Licensed by the state with fingerprint cards and background checks through the state police. Some of the caregivers been with us 6+ years. We have monthly continuing education on different geriatric medical issues including caring for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. But nothing compares to CE than the day to day caring for the residents in our homes. That’s education you just can’t pay for. They are not live ins. Staff works 12 hour shifts with awake staff at night to better care for your parents. Also, so they’re not burned out because it is not by any means an easy job. No time or ever would we lock a dementia or Alzheimer’s resident in their room. Just so untrue and inhumane. During the two years your mom and dad stayed with us you never complained about the food. Including when you would attend a gathering, holiday party or a birthday party eating are food prepared by management and staff. We follow a nutrition plan from the state or what best suites the resident’s medical condition via medical professional. Medication is between the POA and the doctor or nurse practitioner PERIOD! Upon arrival to our homes both parents were on a lot of medication. The assistant living facility has absolutely nothing to do with prescribing or taking away medication from a resident. So, you said your dad was on 17 meds and went down to 9 that is between the POA and a licensed medical professional. The POA in this case is you. As a reminder your father was walking with a walker until you berated the nurse practitioner to change his medication against her advisement caused your dad to get injured and then now had to use a wheelchair. To say we drug patients and put them in chairs is an outrage and totally untrue. Again, all medications for are residents is discussed between POA and Licensed medical professional. The cost of the rooms was very fair due to the care they needed. Finally, in almost 10 years we’ve been in business we never had an allegation or violation of abuse or neglect. We are inspected annually by AZDHS and ombudsmen comes in quarterly to check on the residents to make sure their well taking care of. If that’s not enough per AZDHS we have a third-party nurse that writes care plans on the residents and to assure their well-being. Also, never a violation from APS. I know these days it’s easier to write on social media instead of face to face. You had two managers you could have talked too at any time, but you refused to do so in last couple months. I hope your parents are happy at the new assistant living facility. Remember, you were happy with us for a year and eight months. Admit at your loved one's risk...
Do NOT leave your elderly loved ones to be cared for here, particularly if they are not able to clearly communicate. We recently had to remove our 90+ year old non-verbal relative from this facility via paramedics. They discovered then that she had not been properly cleaned, had sores that were infected and she was severely dehydrated (all documented by the hospital). In addition, they advised against calling paramedics because "all they'd do is check her vitals and send her back." She was in the hospital multiple nights recovering. Needless to say she will not be returning to this facility nor would I ever recommend this place to anyone. If I could give them less than zero - I would.

I'll start with the positives. Pleasant Living is a very clean environment, and the staff have done a good job of caring for mom's day-to day- needs. They juggle 9 residents, most (if not all) are using adult diapers and have mobility issues. While my mother is able to feed herself, I have watched the staff carefully feeding others. I haven never worried about neglect, or mistreatment. Some residents have been there for many years. A number of them are on hospice. This home is capable of handling high-level of care needs. When my mom was getting bedsores, the owners unexpectedly bought a memory foam mattress topper for her. (we ended up buying an air topper, instead, but the thought and care was appreciated). This home provides decent care at a *more* affordable price. However, They handle pretty much basic needs only. There are no bingo nights, no real activities outside of the T.V. Occasionally a local will come in with a violin, or the boy scouts come with a therapy dog, but there are no consistent lasting daily activities. There is typically only one staff member working at a time, caring for all 9 residents. There is a support staff member that helps with cooking meals, but doesn't really help with any lifting, washing, or feeding. You will hear this mantra at most care facilities "understaffed". Another livable, but minor frustration is the whole English as a second language for the caregivers. Most of the time, this is not an issue, they are fairly proficient in English. Occasionally, there is a miss-communication due to accent. The meal person is the only one who does not understand most of what is said. I really love half of the caregivers- hard working, invested in their job, and they care about the residents. I'm not sure about the other half. I suspect one of the night persons sometimes sleeps on the sofa, instead of checking beds, or changing diapers when needed. I haven't had too many issues, but there have been a few. The care can be inconsistent. The owners, I think, genuinely care about the people in their homes, but are somewhat unorganized. They own three group homes. I have seen them in this home, though they are not there on a daily basis. They make an effort to know my mom, and to have a hand in her care (as much as possible). My mom needed surgery, and was in the hospital/rehab for 3-ish weeks. They kept saying they were going to come visit, but never did. It wasn't bad, just confusing. The days leading up the surgery, I had to individually tell all the staff members about it, because there is no form of communication between the staff members, or the owners. They have a white board for communication, but there's never anything on it. My mom has M.S., and has a lot of doctor's appointments. I stuck a wall calendar to mom's door, and added appointments to it, and that works. Since doing that, there haven't been any problems. They always have mom ready by the time I need to pick her up. The food is so-so. I've asked around at different doctor's offices, hospitals, friends, and family regarding care facilities in Mesa, and it's pretty much the same everywhere in Mesa. One night is spaghetti, the next is PBj and Cheetos for dinner. There's never an alternate choice, unless you have specific food needs. I buy mom protein shakes and bagged salads on occasion so she has some variety in the diet. I'll also bring her my leftover meals sometimes. We store food in the fridge. Cost feels high, but is actually low when compared to some other facilities. Mom has the master bedroom, with a private bathroom, so the cost is a little higher. There are private, and shared rooms in this home, so the pricing varies. I asked what the price for a smaller room would be, and got two different quotes, $300 difference. (I asked the husband and wife at different times). Maybe the price varies based on room size? Just keep in mind that the price is competitive, but somewhat negotiable. I feel there are decent number of positives for this place. However, we plan to look at other facilities soon. My mom is still pretty active. She is in an electric wheelchair full-time, but is otherwise in good condition. She is getting bored with the T.V. and computer in her room. Most of the residents who live here, are not capable of carrying a conversation. The lack of activities and things to do is a problem for us, but might not be an issue for someone else.

This was a very nice house and set up good for a 10 patient home. But there were mainly women and my Dad didn't really fit in with the type of residents there. They looked like they were more needing a nursing home than home. If that is the level of care you are looking for this may be good fit for you. The caregiver that showed me around seemed very pleasant.

Disappointing
When I went on the tour the director showed us a lot of activities that they would have. My loved one lives here and there has not been any activities. The staff members are not as involved as I thought they were. They have an in house doctor and I wanted to use them but have not heard anything back.
