We picked this community because of the location, and personable staff. Overall it was adequate, but very disappointing that they actively recruited new residents when less than 2 months later they announced closure of the facility, forcing a move within 30 days. Very disruptive.

The staffing could be improved, they are often short staffed . We picked this community, because it is close proximity to our house.

Response from Northgate Senior Living
November 30, 2021Thank you very much for your outstanding review - we appreciate it! Feedback is always welcomed and we thank you for taking time out of your day to review our community! Have a great day!
What we really saw that was positive is the staff, from the front end staff, to the director, who is excellent to work with. They have excellent communication. We get emails all the time with any updates. They're close by to medical facilities, so that's been a Godsend. The shuttle service they have has been very accommodating, so we've been very happy with that. They take the residents to doctor appointments, and on outings. Recently they went to the Tulip Festival. My family members love the food. They were at a different place with turnover in the kitchen that negatively affected the food, and now at Cogir of Northgate they rave about the food. They have no complaints and are very happy. The only downside has been the fact that there aren't any sidewalks along 15th NE. So if they're out walking with their electric walkers, they don't feel comfortable going on an outing to the grocery store due to the lack of sidewalks. Overall we've had a good experience, and would definitely recommend it to others.

The absolutely worst place you could send a loved one. Bad management all around. You would do well to keep looking and avoid this place at all costs

I have lived here for over 3 years' since Cogir has taken over, the quality of food, life, and a experience has gone down to at times abusive. There are several Senior abuse cases pending. I would not recommend a dog to live here, in fact many have moved their dogs out, rather than summit them to imposed self-isolation. If you have food restrictions this is not the place for you, food is startling salty and fatty. They took ll choices away from the menu, so if you are on a restricted diet, you're SOL! As far as activities there are none, unless you call handing out surgery and fat filled root beer floats as an activity. The management is at best indeferent. I would never recommend this place and am looking to move as soon as possible. My Rating a -0!!!!! Horrible place!

Clean, common areas are well maintained. Large easily accessible TV room, but chairs are huge, and too low to get out of easily, Biggest complaint is food. The Quality is consistently inconsistent. Overcooked veggies and meats. Too few green leafy veggies, too few legumes (beans, peas, nuts). Way too many starches - potatoes, breaded fish, breaded processed food (tater tots and pasta.) Fruit available at most meals/desserts. Unhealthy desserts - sugary puddings. Yogurt rarely, and by request, though the population doesn't generally seem to care or differentiate much to dismay of those who do.. Positive : great, caring staff who work their tails off. Two very skilled and available maintenance men keep things running well considering the age of the elevator and plumbing.

Nice, lots of people in a variety of ages, a bit dated but sounds like they are remodeling, not my favorite neighborhood, a bit busy and not great for walking super near to parks/coffee.

High on promises, but low on delivering those promises; even when written into contract agreements. One example is housekeeping services: unreliable although they are suppose to come weekly. Caretaker to resident ratio for assisted living is sub par especially on weekends. Just 2 caretakers for building of over 100 residents. *Staff turnover very HIGH...currently there is no Professional Registered Nurse on site (October & November 2018). There also seems to be a lack of communication between health care staff which results in inconsistent care services for which the resident is paying for. I could not in good conscious recommend Brookdale Northgate for someones parent. My experience ( and my mother's) is they put corporate profit over people.

The building has been renovated and was pleasant. The apartments were very nice, large and well laid out as well as affordable.

Beautiful facility that is currently (June 2018) under renovation. Hallways are more narrow than other facilities I visited and it seemed like I needed a map to navigate the place. Their studio apartment had a sleeping alcove, lots of small and well placed closets, and a private balcony which made this my favorite living space of all the facilities I toured. Base fee was very reasonable but their 'menu' of care for the level of care my parent requires, tripled the base fee and put it out of their price range. Standard activity calendar. The dining room looked and felt like a restaurant, which I also liked a lot.

We loved the people and chose this place because of the room size and balconies but things quickly went downhill. Cleanliness of the facility was an issue, washing machines not working/leaking periodically, and huge bed bug infestation forced us to move.

I liked this tour of the community for the needs of my husbands care. The staff were friendly and answered the questions that we had. The community environment was nice and positive. We liked the menu and the list of activities that are offered. We would have liked this community for care if they were able to meet our needs.

My mom is still adjusting to her new home here at Brookdale Northgate. The location is good for me to be able to see her often. I really like that the staff is so friendly and caring and the way they interact with the residents. Mom likes her room it is warm and inviting, and she really likes having her own balcony and the lighting it provides. She really appreciates how clean the housekeeping crew keeps up her room, changing the sheets and all the other jobs she no longer has to do for herself. It does take some time for the maintenance crew to get around to fix things, such as the elevator's light and the button not working properly. It can be confusing for the residents with memory issues. On another note, we are waiting for the new activities director to get the activities (entertainment, movie nights, excursions away from the community) going that they were to provide for the residents.

The person who showed us around, she was fantastic and a wonderful representative. However the community had had an old person smell and a depressing feeling. It was more like an institutional environment.

I had toured many communities with my father and he really enjoyed this one the most out of all of them. His favorite thing about this place was how friendly and welcoming all of the staff where to him. They also offered a great activity program that he seemed to be very interested and looked forward to getting involved in. I personally liked the fact they offered a few different meals for us to try, we really enjoyed them and the overall dinning experience.

I'm 77; when I moved here, I didn't expect much different from two other retirement/assisted places. Here it's an old, very clean building, one elevator for four floors. Many people seem to have physical or mental disabilities. Though cultural and food/health allergies to pork are common, I was told it's not the kitchen that puts pork in soups and foods, it's the distributors used by this facility... pork is not always noted when present, in the menu; it definitely needs to be for health/religious reasons. The dining area is very clean, though noisy: carpet has been replaced with hard, attractive flooring. The living room TV is often on so loud some residents won't go there , would like more quiet space and activities; they seem to sign up for these as soon as available and posted. This is changing and we are hoping for more.

My impression is that they are adequate. The food service is very good. The restaurant style service is appealing and my sister praised it. Some of their follow-through is deficient. They use Comcast cable service for TV but it is taking a long time to set up my sister's TV. Her TV is very important to her satisfaction.
