About the facility
Arcadia of Crofton I

Arcadia of Crofton I (formerly Autumn Meadows) joined the Arcadia family in July 2021. Crofton I sits directly next door to Crofton II. Crofton I features 16 private rooms, family living, and dining rooms, all amongst a beautiful wooded setting. Located minutes from Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington DC. OUR STORY: A LETTER FROM DONNA In 2003, I was 35 years old with 3 young children and running an accounting business. My 92-year-old grandmother had major surgery, could no longer live alone, and was placed in a large institutional nursing home. She was treated as just another “head in a bed”, with little dignity or quality of life. Thinking she was in her last days, I turned my dining room into her bedroom and provided 24-hour care either myself or from hired in-home caregivers. She lived for another 6 years! I realized that individualized care and attention, as well as a joyful and meaningful existence, could bring a person back to life, and that kind of assisted living didn’t exist yet. I created Arcadia Living with her in mind. In 2006, I licensed my home as an assisted living facility and began taking in other residents who needed care, including my father with dementia....

I got to tour Crofton 1 with [name removed]. She was so nice and answered all of my questions! When I was touring I notice the staff was very involved with the residents. You could tell the staff loved them as if they where family. I am so happy we picked Arcadia for my Grandfather.

New ownership has done wonders
I toured this house a few years ago and came back recently. It has changed so much! They have done some remodeling, but mostly the staff and management are just wonderful. The house is clean, and the residents all seem content and relaxed. The house smells clean, not like a nursing home. I have visited a lot of assisted living facilities, and this one really stands out for its very loving, caring staff.

Hi Josephine, thank you for your review! We strive to be a comfortable home environment, not a large institution. And being a smaller home, we are able to foster close relationships with each of our staff so we can ensure they enjoy their job, and pass that joy onto our residents.

It may be cheaper but you get what you pay for, terrible service, poor nutrition and new workers every other week. Friendly and helpful T the very beginning the. Management disappears and dodge you. There’s activity to only once a week and it’s always lazy boring zumba. The rest of the time there’s just a TV on, your parent is put in front of the TV and the workers sit and text.

We are so sorry to hear that this has been your experience with Arcadia. This is definitely not what we are about! We'd like the opportunity to speak with you directly about your concerns about the service and nutrition so we can improve. We do agree that we’ve had some staff turnover, and that is partly because we have extremely high standards for our caregivers. We want the absolute best, kindest staff taking care of our residents, just like how we’d want our own parents or grandparents cared for. When we determine that someone is not a fit for our company we quickly encourage them to move on. Also, our schedule is designed so that our staff work every other weekend, so you may see a new face now and then. We are a growing company, with a core group of caregivers who have been with us for a long time, some as long as 10 years! In terms of activity, the Zumba we offer once a week is “Zumba Gold”, taught by a Zumba-certified instructor. It is designed for seniors, it is seated with golden oldies music. Arcadia is a home setting, so yes, the residents do watch some TV, just like anyone does. We also read, and play cards, bingo, as well as smaller individualized activities. We find that large group activities can be overstimulating for some of our residents. We apologize that you felt ‘dodged’ by us. We try to give families privacy when they are visiting. Our offices are downstairs in the Crofton 2 house, right next door, so someone from the management team is always around to hear your concerns. Again, please give us the opportunity to improve! We were very happy with them, our loved one was being released earlier than expected from a previous community and they took him on right away. They was a great price for everything they provided. This is assisted living and he started to experience some memory loss, and instead of letting him go because they couldn't care for him, they continue to look after him and adjusted their care to his needs. Only issue they had which they may have fixed, was the turnover right with the night manager who would stay in each house with the residents

Visited on Saturday, [date removed] and met with the owner, [name removed]. She was very nice and provided a lot of good information about assisted living, getting a loved one to get into assisted living. We met her at the house to the right when pulling in the driveway which would be my selection out of the two. We did go for a short tour of the other house and I detected the smell of urine. Very homey, comfortable feeling in which we feel would be great for my father. The grounds are very nice as well for the residents and families to enjoy. Overall I do believe it's a great value.

Autumn Meadows V And Vi
We did not have a great experience here. The community was not always clean and they did not always keep up with my mother's hygiene. Compared to the community she is currently at, the care at Autumn Meadows is not as good. My mother didn't like it here so we decided to move her. They had very little activities available for the residents as well. I think the staff needs more training on how to better deal with those who are in assisted living. It seemed as though a lot of the staff were exasperated and weren't enjoying what they were doing. The new manager they brought in to manage the house was not great and she turned out to be very unkind.

Autumn Meadows
Autumn Meadows has been wonderful for my Mom. The staff is very caring, patient, and understanding of her needs. The home is very clean and meals are really good. They routinely provide games to keep the residents busy and get them to socialize. I can drop off any special supplies for my mom and the staff will store them and give them to her as appropriate. A hair dresser comes every two week to cut and style mom's hair and a nurse looks in on everybody once per month. Each resident has a private bedroom and there is about about one bathroom for every two residents.

Highly Satisfied with Autumn Meadows
I was very impressed with Autumn Meadows the moment I first visited their facility on Defense Highway. It is a homestyle environment and very peaceful. I came unannounced on a Saturday mid-afternoon. It is very spacious and tucked in front of a nicely wooded lot. The food they prepare there is from scratch and the facility only houses 14 residents to include my Dad who was a recent introduction to their community after he was discharged from the Crofton Convalescence Center when his rehab therapy ended. Unfortunately my Dad is still grieving the death of my Mother last May and his decline was rapid to the point where he could not live alone and be able to take care of himself. When he was at Crofton Convalescence he was very uptight because it has the appearance of a hospital and was a very chaotic environment. He is still a bit uneasy but the peace and quiet and intimacy of considerably reduced population has been a huge improvement. He has a private room with the bathroom just steps away in the hallway and he has a nice forest view. Like most of the residents at Autumn Meadows he would prefer to be at home. But I am hoping the cheery staff and homemade food and the reduced chaotic environment will benefit him. The Staff are very understanding of his situation and have been taking great strides to amalgamate him into their tranquil lifestyle. Physicians are on hand through a minor surcharge to routinely assess the residents. Susan Masters and Jennifer Peterein are the administrators, the former being the owner of this enterprise. They were very willing to take my Dad into their fold and work with his dementia issues whereas the staff were very inconsistent at the Crofton Convalescence Center and rude with my Dad at times that I personally witnessed. I am hoping this excellent environment will continue to benefit him. I was very lucky to get my Dad enrolled with them. I understand there is a bit of a waiting list. If Autumn Meadows is full there is always the Waugh Chapel Genesis facility which took great care of my Mom for the last two weeks of her life. However, there is a huge difference between both facilities. The cost factors alone at the Waugh Chapel location are very steep but they provide excellent care. My Mom's cost would have been about 12K a month if she had not passed away even though she had robust insurance from her PG County Schools benefits. Autumn Meadows's monthly charges range from 2 to 3 grand depending on the specific care each resident requires. They are a non-profit. Both Susan and Jennifer have been been willing to explore a variety of actions to make my Dad feel welcome and address his issues. Both Susan and Jennifer have personally taken the responsibility to make sure each resident is fulfilled on a case by case standard. Susan has taken on patients from other facilities and has the final decision on who may reside at her facilities even if her decisions are contrary to conventional medical attitudes. They appear to take every measure to retain their residents in a very thoughtful and willing way. She has managed to become affiliated with a broad map of medical services dedicated to her facilities that again do not involve extreme charges. I highly recommend their services even if my Dad ends up not being in the realm of what they can offer. Lastly, there is a dedicated nurse who actually lives at the facility along with the residents.

They take the worry away.
I visited multiple facilities to try an place my mom. She is suffering from congestive heart failure so Autumn Meadows was not on the radar. I am glad I parted ways with the social worker and made some tough decisions on my own. I can honestly say everything possible is being done at Autumn Meadows to give mom the best quality of life one could ever ask for under the circumstances. Hospitals, rehab facilities and nursing homes could learn a thing or two from these people. They are kind, dedicated and hard working, from the staff at the facility to the administrative office.

Uncle John really has a perfect home!
Visited numerous facilities trying to find the "right" place for family member. THIS was it!!! The director, staff, location and peacefulness, not to mention really good food were hands down well above all the other competition. It really felt and has turned out to be "family." Clients are so well cared for and the furnishings were really good. Every member of the staff genuinely cares and it shows.

Nice place, overall
We used this facility for a time for my loved one, and overall I think they did a very good job. It was a nice, clean facility, and in general the staff were all very friendly and caring. However, they ended up hiring a caregiver that we had some issues with (she was too quick to call in an ambulance, which was becoming very costly), so we ended up moving my loved one to a different facility.

Really nice place. There are currently 11 residents, although they can accommodate 15--all private rooms. Many sitting areas in the home, most with TV's and several outdoor patios. Well decorated with gently used furniture that has been well taken care of. Got a sense of a safe, clean and peaceful environment. The residents had just finished bingo and were settling in to watching TV or relaxing. My visit was not scheduled or expected--as the Director had said I could stop in at any time.

My mom loves it here
My mother loves living here. Everyone is so nice to her and myself when I visit. The staff went out of their way when my mom moved into the home. She had some trouble adjusting to a new setting, but the director provided my mom with her own aide the first 3 days to be with her and comfort her and introduce her to the other residents. This made me much more comfortable with leaving my mom in a new home.
