Residential care homes — sometimes called care homes, board and care homes, group homes, or personal care homes — are often houses in residential neighborhoods that are adapted, equipped, and staffed to care for a small number of residents, usually 10 or less. Similar to assisted living but in a smaller, more residential setting, these homes provide supervision, organized events, and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). This means care homes can help with everyday routines but typically do not provide 24-hour skilled nursing assistance.

Precipitation and Inclement Weather
Located near the Great Lakes and right along the path of America’s “Rust Belt,” Pittsburgh has earned a reputation as a blue-collar town. Over the years the city has been home to various industries, namely steel and coal, and the values of the city often tend to reflect its working-class history.
Simultaneously, Pittsburgh is very much a modern city with modern ideals and a bustling culture. Home to the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, a private research university specializing in art, science, and engineering, the city is also known for its academic background.
As with any major American city with its fair share of history, Pittsburgh is home to a vibrant and diverse community. The city is large and welcoming enough that people from all walks of life feel comfortable there. Politically, Pennsylvania is often described as a “swing state,” and Pittsburgh’s preferences can vary from those who prefer more traditional conservative values, a desire for change and modernity, solidarity around workers’ rights, or a combination of each.

Pittsburgh is considered very friendly to members of the LGBTQ+ community. This means that members of the community are accepted by the general public and can actively participate in public life without fear of bigotry.
Famed industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was not born in Pittsburgh, but his influence on the city’s steel industry is what helped earn him his fortune, much of which he invested back into the area’s community. As a result, many local buildings and landmarks bear his name, perhaps most notably the Carnegie Museums, a grouping of 4 public collections of exhibits.
The Carnegie Museum of Art, founded in 1895 and one of the earliest modern art museums in the country, continues today focusing on works by contemporary artists and those who, historically, have been ahead of the curve. The collection also houses photographic exhibits as well as examples of international art spanning the late 17th century to today. One of the most notable alumni of Carnegie-Mellon University, then the Carnegie Institute of Technology, was celebrated pop artist Andy Warhol, who has his own museum under the Carnegie banner. The Andy Warhol Museum of Pittsburgh showcases the life and works of the Pittsburgh-born “rock star” artist of the 20th century. Also under the Carnegie museum umbrella is the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, containing 230 dinosaur objects including a complete tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, various depictions of animal history from throughout the world, as well as exhibits of human history including early Native American artifacts and a collection of art and objects from ancient Egypt. And lastly, the Carnegie Science Center earns the distinction of being the most visited museum in Pittsburgh. It houses a planetarium, a miniature replica of a Western Pennsylvania railroad which has been on display for 50 years, as well as the USS Requin, a World War II submarine docked as a permanent exhibition.
For a nice afternoon stroll, the Phipps Conservatory located in Schenley Park is a must-see Pittsburgh destination. Built in 1893 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Phipps Conservatory features 14 rooms of gardens and exotic plants, including ferns, orchids, palms, and a sunken garden. The main building itself is a sight to behold — a stunning greenhouse built in beautiful Victorian style. If you prefer a more vibrant and lively setting, visit The Strip District. A popular tourist destination, The Strip District is an area bustling with food vendors, art, shopping, and more, and makes for a fun and exciting day of activity.
Transportation
Pittsburgh is known to have a very reliable public transportation system, which is operated by the Port Authority. It consists of a bus service, light rail system, and scenic incline, providing a fun way to view the city as well as scale Mount Washington. All options cover a large portion of the city and span a wide schedule, operating from early morning hours and often running until midnight or later. Discounted fares are offered to disabled persons and people 65 years of age and above. The Port Authority also operates ACCESS Paratransit, which provides door-to-door transportation services for seniors as well as people with disabilities who are unable to utilize the bus system.
