Demographics and Values

Albuquerque leans somewhat liberal, with slightly more than 50 percent of the population voting Democrat in 2016. Leading industries in the area include aerospace technology, oil and gas, and computer chip manufacturing. Kirtland Air Force Base, Intel Corporation, and Sandia National Labs make up the city’s top employers. The city also generates a considerable profit from tourism.

Nearly half of Albuquerque’s population is Hispanic or Latino. Albuquerque is friendly towards the LGBTQ+ community. As a state, New Mexico legalized same-sex marriage in 2013, more than a year before the rest of the nation. The city hosts an annual Pride Festival and The Way Out West Film Fest, which features movies that center LGBTQ+ characters and experiences.

Nature seekers in Albuquerque will gravitate toward its sweeping views, peaceful trails, and peaks for sunset gazing. Both strollers and avid hikers can find their footing with a variety of terrains, such as La Luz Trailhead, Sandia Crest, Boca Negra Canyon, and Paseo del Bosque Trail.

Transportation

Albuquerque’s public transportation, managed by ABQ RIDE, encompasses both buses and a metro system. The bus routes extend through much of the city, serving more than 13 million passengers. Seniors and those with disabilities are eligible for discounts.
