Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and aid to your loved one who need a helping hand with things such as dressing or taking medication. Assisted living communities commonly offer care supervision, opportunities for recreational activity, and assistance with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or hospice. The state of Wisconsin maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this community type. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: development of service plans, community policies and procedures, challenging behaviors, and provision of personal care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include leisure time activities, health monitoring, information and referral, and including personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
