Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and assistance to seniors who might need a helping hand with everyday activities such as dressing or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities frequently provide assistance with transit and appointments, support with daily activities, and outings for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, nursing care, or “aging in place”. The state of Wisconsin has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These areas include standard precautions, community policies and procedures, challenging behaviors, and medication management. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, independent living skills, including personal care, and transportation.
