|| 5 Questions for Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted Living in Orange, Virginia

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a long term senior living option which includes support for the activities of daily living such as for example meals or snacks, showering, getting dressed and prescription medication supervision. It is not exactly like a nursing home, where residents can get round-the-clock skilled nursing care. Every assisted living facility has its mix of offerings, features, activities and lifestyle. Many also offer assistance for seniors with particular needs such as diabetes, incontinence management needs or the early stages of cognitive decline due to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Assisted Living Vs. Memory Care

Based on the National Center for Assisted Living, nearly one in four residents currently in assisted living in the state of Virginia experience Alzheimer’s disease or another kind of dementia. In addition, many assisted living facilities include support for residents with cognitive issues. So how do you know if designated memory care or just assisted living is what your loved one needs?

Although many assisted living communities offer memory care onsite, each of the kinds of care are not the same. Memory care will provide full-time specific services for somebody with dementia while assisted living is designed to meet the needs of people who want help with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, getting dressed or dining. Assisted living can be a good option for people in the earlier stages of dementia but for individuals who have who have wandering situations or who have caused injury to themselves or others, a protected memory care setting is probably a better choice.

When you have specific questions about what kind of care your family member needs, speak to a doctor. They can help you evaluate whether assisted living will continue to work or if you want to seek out memory care. You may also speak to one of our Senior Living Advisors. They have helped many family members with questions about what kind of treatment is the best fit for their relative or friend and they can help you, too.

What Services Are Offered in Assisted Living?

While each facility is unique, most assisted living communities provide a variety of living arrangements, an array of meal options, public spaces and complimentary transportation, among other services and facilities. Such as:

  • Activities, entertainment and occasions, both on-site and off
  • Exercise and well being programs
  • House cleaning, including bed-linen assistance
  • Access to healthcare professionals

Assisted Living Inspections and Ratings in Virginia

The state of Virginia offers excellent access to its records for assisted living services through the Virginia Department of Social Services. Data open to review includes the dates of inspection, whether an inspection was prompted by a grievance, if the inspector discovered any wrong doing and what the plan of correction was to address a violation. You can search by community name or zip code to find the facilities in the areas you are thinking about.

In the state of Virginia, assisted living communities are required by law to:

  • Allow only two individuals to reside in one bedroom
  • Provide handrails, non-skid floors and grab bars in every bathtub and shower
  • Equip all bedrooms with attached restrooms with signaling equipment that residents may use in case they want help.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Orange?

According to the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Index, usual cost of assisted living in the larger Orange, Virginia , metropolitan region in 2018 ranged from $1500 to $9350 per month. Charges for assisted living may differ widely depending on services, amenities and location, so that it pays to take a look in nearby suburbs and communities if you have that flexibility.

The Senior Living Cost Index is based on the actual rates families pay once they move into assisted living and it is the only price index of its kind. To find out more about senior living costs, visit the A Place for Mom Senior Living Cost Planner web page.

How to Pay for Senior Living In Orange, VA

Many individuals pay for a move to assisted living through the sale of a home or personal savings, but for some people, this might not be an option. Here are three other resources that may help you finance assisted living:

  • Veterans Benefits: Many seniors may qualify for veterans benefits that they don’t know about. One benefit specifically, Aid & Attendance, has made it possible for a large number of families have the funds for assisted living. To meet the criteria, veterans have to be at least 65 years old and have served at least 3 months of active duty, with at least 1 day during what the Veterans Administration considers active wartime periods. Qualifying widows and widowers of veterans may also be in a position to collect benefits. With the current average age group of U.S. veterans at 64 years old, it’s worth it to discover if your loved one may qualify for benefits. Look at our Guide to VA Benefits and Long-Term Care for additional information or contact the Virginia Department of Veterans Services or Veterans Information for Virginia to learn more or go to va.gov.
  • Life Insurance Policies. If the senior you are assisting transfer to assisted living has a life insurance policy, you might be able to cash out the policy and obtain funds now. Different limitations and regulations apply depending on the kind of plan you have, so contact a financial specialist or elderlaw lawyer to find out more about your options and to assess what’s ideal for your position.
  • Reverse Mortgages. For senior couples who may have different needs, a reverse mortgage can be a good way for one person to move into assisted living while the other remains in the home while their partner transitions to senior living. A reverse mortgage permits homeowners aged 62 or older to borrow against their home equity. For more information, get in touch with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to find a reverse mortgage counseling agency near you.

For even more ideas about how to fund your move to senior living, contact A Place for Mom to speak to a Senior Living Advisor today. Or find more information on our 5 Best-Kept Secrets to Financing Senior Care page.

5 Questions to Ask an Assisted Living Facility

Choosing the best assisted living facility is a big decision, both for a senior and for their family. Here are five things to consider when thinking about making the move to assisted living:

  1. What's the staff-to-resident ratio? Will this community offer your loved one with the support they need? Based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 25% of assisted living facilities have a ratio of one personal care assistant for each 23 residents. Staffing can vary greatly depending on the size of the community, so make sure to ask about the communities you are interested in.
  2. Is there yard? For many residents making the changeover from an individual household to assisted living means letting go of a favorite garden or outdoor area, so having access to a gardening area, an outdoor patio or a courtyard is normally beneficial. Many larger assisted living communities provide a range of yards, with features such as walking paths, gardens and BBQ areas for community events.
  3. Just how many staff are on hand to assist during the night? Some assisted living communities provide 24x7 nursing personnel, while others may have more generalized assistance available after hours. In the state of Virginia, assisted living facilities must have a minimum of two direct care workers awake and available at all times.
  4. Is there a waiting list? Popular communities can fill up fast. If the one you like isn't available, inquire about the waiting list and what the community’s plan is for controlling it. Many communities will ask for a deposit many facilities have internal lists for special treatment needs. Here's where doing your research can actually pay back -- plan in advance!
  5. What assistance are included in the monthly charge? Before signing the contract, it’s smart to understand what is included in the basic fee structure and what might incur additional expense. Some facilities employ a fee-for-services model, or a la carte pricing, which means they charge a regular monthly fee for rent and meals but supplemental costs for things like medication management. Others may use a tiered prices model where different levels of treatment are charged different costs.

For more information about what to search for when visiting an assisted living community, see our Assisted Living Residence Checklist page.

How Do I Choose the Right Assisted Living Facility?

With so many choices to choose from, choosing the best assisted living community can seem like a intimidating task. That’s where our Senior Living Advisors will help -- they are qualified in helping match seniors to the services that will be the best fit for their care needs, personality and budget.

Here are a few things to keep in mind at the time of your search:

  • Make sure to look for your loved one, not you. Today’s assisted living facilities offer everything from homey surroundings to upscale resort-style luxury living. It can be easy to be influenced by the features and options you might decide for yourself, but ultimately it comes down to what will work best for your family member.
  • Focus on the today, not the past. Does your family member need help washing and getting dressed? Do they have particular needs like limited vision or special diets? Would they enjoy the benefits of a bigger facility or be more comfortable in a smaller, more intimate setting?
  • Take into account the here and now, not what might have been their personal preference ten or 15 years ago.
  • Intend to tour at least 3 to 5 communities, if you can. Start with planned tours and consider having meals with the residents. If none of them seems like a good match, ask your Senior Living Advisor for more choices. And don’t hesitate to ask questions and take notes while you’re there.

The process of choosing the right assisted living community can be overwhelming, but there are assets that will help. Call A Place for Mom today -- we can help save you money and time and make sure you make the correct choice.
