Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities provide apartment-style housing and social events as well as individual help. The types of service provided often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer skilled nursing care, dementia care, or respite. The state of Texas maintains specific standards related to this type of facility. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living facilities supervises this facility type. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include returning medications to the proper locked areas, residents may self-administer their own medication, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents’ individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program--called STAR+PLUS.This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident's physician must be provided according to the service plan, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include accessibility requirements, basic principles of management, confidentiality, and resident and provider rights and responsibilities. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, supervision or direct administration of medications, activity and/or social program for residents, and general supervision or oversight.
