Assisted living communities provide healthcare, social interaction, and supervision to people around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer outings for leisurely activity, assistance with transit and appointments, and supervision of care. In some situations, communities may offer hospice, nursing care, or continuing care. Texas maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this type of community. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These include: basic principles of management, basic emergency first-aid, resident characteristics (including dementia), and resident and provider rights and responsibilities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and residents may self-administer their own medication. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment .
