Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Along with Austin’s reputation as a forward-thinking college town, or as a high-tech bubble in central Texas, the city is perhaps best known to many as “The Live Music Capital of the World.” Texas may be famous for its place in country music history, and while Austin has plenty of country music, the city features hundreds of music venues showcasing every genre imaginable. It’s quite easy to find live music every night of the week in Austin. Much of Austin’s nightlife centers on the historic Sixth Street, the city’s main entertainment district. Every year Austin hosts the South by Southwest music festival, showcasing top music talent big and small, of all genres, from performers all over the world.

If you’ve had your fill of loud entertainment and want to escape to somewhere tranquil, visit the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, a serene outdoor sculpture garden dedicated to the works of American sculptor Charles Umlauf. The garden is wheelchair accessible, features a number of secluded benches to sit and talk, and the statues are waxed, allowing visitors to touch them if desired.

History buffs may be interested to know that Austin is home to the LBJ Presidential Library, a memorial library dedicated to Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States. Located on the grounds of the University of Texas, the LBJ Library sits within a 14-acre campus and contains numerous artifacts dedicated to the life of the former president, including a replica of the Oval Office decorated to appear as it did during his presidency, as well as a photo mural displaying scenes from Johnson’s life.

Austin is also home of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the official history museum of the state of Texas. Named after former lieutenant governor Bob Bullock, the museum includes a tribute to the region’s Native American heritage, historic and contemporary art and music from the state, science exhibits, and even showings of Texas-themed “b-movies.” The Bob Bullock museum is a must-see destination for anyone the least bit Texas-curious to learn the details of the path that led from the region’s early history to the state we know today.
