Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care for your loved one who may require a helping hand with everyday activities such as dressing or bathing. Services provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of South Carolina maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing regulates this community type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs and special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs . Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: Confidentiality of resident information and records and review of the Bill of Rights for Long-Term Care communities., Basic first-aid, use of restraints , and management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with ADLs for the resident, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, and recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, assistance with ADLs, medication assistance, and at least one structured recreation activity each day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and monitor blood sugar levels.
