Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, support, and aid to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually offer care supervision, support with the activities of daily life, and help with transportation and appointments. In select situations, communities may provide skilled nursing care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Pennsylvania, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $40,020 . Pennsylvania maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Human Services, Bureau of Human Services Licensing governs this community type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff must obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: abuse and reporting requirements, emergency procedures, residents’ rights, and infection control. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with unanticipated ADLs for a defined recovery period, monitoring and emergency response, basic cognitive support, and housekeeping. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day and meals must meet recommended dietary allowances established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as immunization history, allergies, special health or dietary needs, and medication regimen.
