Assisted living communities provide social interaction, care, and oversight to people around 65 years of age or older. Services provided often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or continuing care. In Pennsylvania, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $40,020 . The state of Pennsylvania has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. Department of Human Services, Bureau of Human Services Licensing governs this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, monitoring and emergency response, assistance with unanticipated ADLs for a defined recovery period, and basic cognitive support. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must meet recommended dietary allowances established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and must provide three meals a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include residents’ rights, emergency procedures, infection control, and abuse and reporting requirements. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as special health or dietary needs, medication regimen, immunization history, and physical health exam.
