Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, personal care, and supervision to persons who are on average 65 years old. Services offered often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, “aging in place”, or hospice. Oregon maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as risk indicator assessment, physical health exam, ADLs test, and mental health evaluation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid and must provide three meals a day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: infection control, the values of community-based care, residents’ rights, and emergency procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health services, assist psychosocial wellbeing, transportation services, and 24-hour emergency care service. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room.
