Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

When it comes to senior living, Fargo, ND is an excellent option for you or your loved one. While there are fewer wood-chipper accidents than the Coen brothers may suggest, Fargo does have a lot of Midwest and old Scandanavian charm. One unique aspect of living in Fargo, ND is that the city is commonly referenced in association with its sister city across the border, Moorhead, Minnesota.

Fargo is an excellent place to retire because it has more cultural opportunities than most other rural Midwest cities. This is due in part to the three different universities in the city which help to provide year round arts and cultural events. There are lots of shows and performances that are put on by the schools as well as by the Fargo-Moorhead Opera and the Fargo-Moorhead Orchestra.

For recreation, the city maintains a number of public parks and there are 6 golf courses including the Fargo Country Club and the Prairiewood Golfcourse. Many of the locals enjoy spending time outdoors with popular pastimes including fishing, duck hunting, cross country skiing, and most of all snowmobiling.

Transportation

For public transportation in the city, there is MATBUS, which is operated by the Fargo-Moorhead Metro Area Transit Authority. The buses primarily service college students and connect Fargo, Moordhead, the universities and the surrounding suburbs. For further travel options, there are many Greyhound bus routes as Fargo is considered the regional transportation hub between Duluth, Minneapolis, and the rest of the upper-Midwest.

Licensure Terms for Assisted Living in Fargo, ND

In North Dakota there are two main definitions that cover assisted living. Seniors who seek public assistance from Medicare or Medicaid are required by the state to go to a Basic Care Facility unless they have exhausted the available financial resources but still require more assistance.

Basic Care Facility: "Basic care facility" means a facility licensed under North Dakota Century Code chapter 23-09.3. The focus of these facilities is to provide room and board as well as health, social, and personal care. Ultimately, the goal is to assist the residents with attaining or maintaining their highest level of functioning consistent with the resident assessment and care plan which is established before move-in. These facilities are required to provide services to five or more residents not related by blood or marriage to the owner or manager. The services are to be provided on a twenty-four-hour basis within the facility, either directly or through contract with a third party provider. This level of care must provide assistance with the activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living; provision of leisure, recreational, and therapeutic activities; and supervision of nutritional needs and medication administration.

Assisted Living Facility: "Assisted living facility" means a building or structure containing a series of at least five living units operated as one entity. These facilities provide services to five or more individuals who are not related by blood, marriage, or guardianship to the owner or manager of the entity. The facility must also be kept, used, maintained, advertised, or held out to the public as a place that provides or coordinates individualized support services to accommodate the individual's needs and abilities to maintain as much independence as possible. An assisted living facility does not include a facility that is a congregate housing facility, licensed as a basic care facility.
