An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers care, support, and assistance to medically stable individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide care supervision, aid with transportation and appointments, and aid with daily activities. In select situations, communities may provide nursing care, "aging in place", or hospice. In New Mexico, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $38,100 . The state of New Mexico has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. New Mexico Department of Health, Division of Health Improvement, Health community Licensing and Certification Bureau regulates this community type. Public assistance is available through 1115 Centennial Care waiver managed care demonstration program. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include transportation safety, reporting requirements for abuse or neglect or exploitation, resident confidentiality, and fire safety. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, ADLs support, assist with medication administration, and supervise self-administration of medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a pharmacist must consult with the community quarterly, staff may assist in administering medication, and residents may self administer medication.
