Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid to seniors who may require a helping hand with things such as mobility or meal preparation. Assisted living communities commonly provide assistance with appointments and transit, support with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this type of community. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: residents rights, pain management, infection control/prevention, and caring for residents with impairment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assist with personal care, dietary services, recreational activities, and social work services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, nursing needs, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and routines and preferences. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication.
