Assisted living communities offer social interaction, oversight, and personal care to people who are about 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, help with transportation and appointments, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In some situations, communities may offer continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a health care assessment, and a level of care assessment. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: infection control/prevention, emergency plans and procedures, residents rights, and caring for residents with impairment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, monitor dosage, and administer medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, and provide three meals a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include limited nursing care, transportation, dietary services, and social work services.
