An assisted living facility is a residential community which provides aid, care, and supervision to healthy persons who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living facilities frequently offer care supervision, help with the activities of daily life, and help with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, facilities may provide dementia care, continuing care, or respite. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $10,494 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $9,581 . The state of New Hampshire has a number of provisions associated with this kind of facility. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health Facilities Administration regulates this facility type. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room.This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-direct administration of medications, the facility may remind residents to take medication, and staff may observe and record medication side effects. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, and provide snacks between meals and before bed. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These include: infection control, limitations on/correct use of restraints, resident plan of care, and first aid. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a nursing assessment and assessment by a trained assessor. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include social/recreational activities, crisis intervention, personal care, and health/safety services.
