Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and assistance for persons who may require help with everyday activities such as cooking food or bathing. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with transportation and appointments, assistance with daily activities, and care supervision. In certain instances, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include protective oversight, assistance with distribution, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with storage of medications. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, communicating with persons with dementia, promoting independence in activities of daily living, and (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance.
