Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers supervision, aid, and support to independent seniors who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often offer aid with transportation and appointments, support with daily activities, and supervision of care. In select cases, communities may provide nursing, continuing care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this community type. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with recreational activities, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and nursing services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include communicating with persons with dementia, behavior management, preservation of resident dignity, and mentally confused residents. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
