Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as personalized assistance. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with appointments and transit, supervision of care, and chances for organized activity. In certain situations, communities may provide skilled nursing, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with storage of medications, 24-hour care, and nursing services. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: abuse/neglect, fire safety, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, and promoting independence in activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
