Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides assistance, support, and care to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services offered often involve aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually. Staff must receive education in a variety of fields. These include: behavior management, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability, and communicating with persons with dementia. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour care, assistance with administration of medications, protective oversight, and assistance with activities of daily living .
