Assisted living communities offer care, supervision, and social events to persons who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide outings for social activity, help with the activities of daily life, and help with transportation and appointments. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, fire safety, and techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with storage of medications, assistance with distribution, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority.
