Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and assistance to people who may need help with preparing meals or dressing. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with appointments and transportation, care supervision, and assistance with the activities of daily life. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These include: communicating with persons with dementia, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, behavior management, and working with residents with mental illness. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
