Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and assistance to seniors who may require a helping hand with things such as washing or dressing. Services provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, protective oversight, assistance with administration of medications, and assistance with distribution. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include preservation of resident dignity, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, and 24 hours of additional training on assessment on cognitive ability. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted.
