Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, healthcare, and oversight to individuals around 65 years old. The types of service offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, skilled nursing, or dementia care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include 24-hour care, protective oversight, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with storage of medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include working with residents with mental illness, 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, and communicating with persons with dementia. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician.
