Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individualized help. Assisted living communities usually offer chances for organized activity, supervision of care, and support with the activities of daily life. In select cases, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . Massachusetts has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs certifies this community type. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These include: philosophy of independent living, 7-hour general orientation , management of self-administered medications, and elder abuse and neglect. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, assessment of allergies and dietary needs, assessment of residents ability to manage medications, and assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing residents while they take the medication, management of self-administered medications, and reminding residents to take medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, and management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, qualified dietitian must counsel residents regarding therapeutic diets and other dietary issues, a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, and communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences.
