Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual support. The services offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, nursing, or respite. In Louisiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $43,800 . Louisiana maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Hospitals, Health Standards Section licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health related services to maximize the resident’s autonomy , assisted living services, health-related services that are designed to allow the individual to reside in the least restrictive setting of his/her choice, and health-related services that encourage family and community involvement. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. menus must be planned or approved by a registered licensed dietician if the resident has a medically prescribed diet This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include the medication regimen may be read to the resident, the resident may be physically assisted in pouring or otherwise taking medications, and the dosage may be checked according to the container label. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must make reasonable accommodations to meet dietary requirements and religious and ethnic preferences, menus must be reviewed and approved by a nutritionist or dietician to ensure nutritional appropriateness, communities must provide three meals a day, and communities must make reasonable accommodations to meet residents’ temporary schedule changes and preferences. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: instruction in the specific responsibilities of each employee’s job, community policies and procedures, supervisory/management techniques, and emergency and evacuation procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The service plan must include the scope of services that will be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment of the resident’s needs and preferences, service plan must be revised when a resident’s condition or preferences change, and pre-admission appraisal.
