An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides supervision, support, and care to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often provide aid with the activities of daily life, opportunities for organized activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or continuing care. In Kansas, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $53,670 . The state of Kansas has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Secretary of Aging and Disability Services certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets are provided if included in the negotiated service agreement, menus must be planned based on The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and residents must have input into the selection of food served and the timing of meals. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services waivers,. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health care services based on an assessment by a licensed nurse, wellness and health monitoring, supervised nursing care, and other services needed to support residents’ health and safety. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The negotiated service agreement is reviewed at least annually or when requested, The agreement describes the service provider, communities must develop a negotiated service agreement for each resident, and The agreement describes the parties responsible for payment when services are provides by an outside agency. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication regimens are reviewed each time the resident experiences a significant change in condition, self-administer medications, and medication regimens are reviewed at least quarterly. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
