Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for people who require help with everyday activities such as mobility or meal preparation. Services offered often include help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, respite, or nursing. In Iowa, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,933 . The state of Iowa has specific rules related to this type of community. The Department of Inspections and Appeals, Health communities Division regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide hot meals at least once a day, a licensed dietitian must be available to write and approve the therapeutic menu, all meals must follow recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and a healthcare provider must review food preparation and service procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer medications, medications may be administered by community staff, and medication reminders. Staff must obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include assisted living management or nursing course, fire safety, emergency procedures, and accident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as negotiated risk agreement, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and a multidisciplinary team must be involved in service planning when residents require personal care or health-related services. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include health-related services, assistance with personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, and resident access to a 24-hour personal emergency response system.
