Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of organized social events and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities usually provide chances for leisurely activity, aid with transportation and appointments, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, observing the resident, and supervision of self-administered medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication reminders, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with activities of daily living. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Staff must obtain education in a variety of fields. These include: reporting, residents’ need and service plans, job responsibilities and limitations, and promotion of dignity. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
