Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides assistance, supervision, and care to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. The types of service provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or skilled nursing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication reminders, emergency response systems, housekeeping, and supervision of self-administered medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, and medication administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include choice, philosophy and goals, hygiene, and promotion of dignity. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident's cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident's psychosocial condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident's representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety.
