An assisted living community is a residential community which administers aid, supervision, and care to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with transportation and appointments, care supervision, and outings for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing, hospice, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, the provision of assisted self-preservation, assisted living care, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These include: emergency preparedness, exploitation of a resident, emergency first-aid and CPR, and attendance policies. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and A written care plan must document the assessment findings.
