Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care to seniors who may require a helping hand with dressing or washing. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for social activity, help with the activities of daily life, and help with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation licenses this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, and reading the label. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include 26 hours of training plus a competency test, community sanitation procedures, infection control, and resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician .
