Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual support. Assisted living communities often provide supervision of care, outings for leisurely activity, and aid with appointments and transportation. In certain instances, communities may offer skilled nursing, hospice, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this community type. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, and personal care services. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: community sanitation procedures, resident behavior and needs, infection control, and resident rights.
