Assisted living communities administer oversight, healthcare, and social opportunities to persons who are about 65 years old. The types of service offered often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer skilled nursing, hospice, or dementia care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, assistance with activities of daily living , and personal care services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These include: resident behavior and needs, reporting incidents, resident rights, and providing assistance with activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , communities must document such assessment, and medical examination report. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and reading the label.
