Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as personalized assistance. Services offered often include help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. Staff must obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, how to recognize early signs of illness, need for professionall help, and recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia.
