As a major city with a pleasant climate, Charlotte has no shortage of indoor and outdoor activities. Plenty of museums call Charlotte home, including museums of art, culture, and history. Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art houses works in all mediums by some of the modern masters. The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is a cultural center focusing on all types of artistic expression celebrating African-American voices. Freedom Park is a 98-acre city park and a Charlotte favorite. The Reed Gold Mine, located just outside Charlotte, is a living history museum constructed around the site of the earliest gold discoveries in the country, where visitors are invited to try their hand at panning for gold.
