Governor's Glen Memory Care Assisted Living

About the community

Governor's Glen opened in 1999 as an exclusive Alzheimer's/memory impaired assisted living community. Its founder and owner, Dr. Paul A. Colon, was a caregiver for his mother, Millie Michaels, who passed away from Alzheimer's Disease in 1997. Becoming an ALFA certified developer, he used his experience and knowledge to help design an assisted living residence that looks and feels like a home, not a hospital or hotel. Dr. Colon learned through his experience with his mother that socialization is the key to survival for a person with Alzheimer's. His mother was staying at home receiving 24-hour care when she fell and broke her hip in 1993. She was almost non-verbal and had lost much weight prior to her fall. But with a stay at a rehab facility, receiving social stimulation, she began showing signs of cognitive improvement. Dr. Colon was inspired to build a place for his mom, a place where residents would be loved and cared for and safe. His mother passed away before the dream could be realized for her, but her picture hangs over the fireplace in the parlor at Governor's Glen, with a plaque inscribed: 'Dedicated to the memory of Millie Michaels and all those who...

no this place

I had several issues with this community. They used Covid as an excuse and did not come up with safe ways to continue things that were necessary like physical therapy. we had several items come up missing and there was an issue with theft. I would not recommend this community. The director would communicate with me and would not return calls or texts.

Don't Go There!

They were rude. They lied about the issues of my loved one. They tried to isolate me from seeing my loved one. They left her in poop. I had to get the police so I could see my loved one. The wrist of my loved one was broken.

Highly recommend

We had a great experience with Governor's Glen Memory care. My mom never complained about the food, they were very nutritious and they were really good about portion sizes and snack in between meals. While we were here there was a great activities director, she had very interesting activities and always kept the residents engaged. The staff were always very supportive and accommodating with anything we needed.

My experience with Governor's Glen

We chose Governors Glen because of the convenient location to our family. Her room here was on the smaller side compared to some others we looked into. The food here was not good quality and it was cold when it was delivered. I would recommend depending on your circumstances.

I would recommend

The staff members at the community are always friendly, and the care services are excellent. When we speak with our loved one she is always happy and says the meals are good. They also have plenty of activities to participate in, she is constantly kept busy.

Be prepared to supplement your loved one with different food

We chose Governors Glen because it was strictly a memory care facility and very close to my house, that way I could go visit often. She went from a very large room to a single room here, so it was on the smaller side. One big complaint we had was the food. It was not fresh and by the time it was served, it was cold. They served things like hot dogs and french fries and did not offer any condiments to go along with the meals. There were also not a lot of activities that I was aware of at all, and I would pick up the calendar weekly. From what I saw, this facility seemed clean and the staff members were nice, but they were not very interactive with the residents.

Governor's Glen review

This community was spacious, it was kind of a unique layout. The rooms are on the smaller side. If someone asked, we would recommend this community to a family or friend with reservations, it would depend on the health of their loved one and the dementia phase they are in

It's a Good Place to Take Your Loved One

I was able to leave my loved one for five days for a break. They had different activities for each day that he was there. I would recommend it. I tried to visit a second time, and when I called to see if they had availability and they didn't have room for him. There isn't a lot of traffic, the setup is great. There are different pods and security for your loved one. The pods had their own dining room, activity room. My loved one and I liked the set up of the pods.

Governor's Glen Memory Care Assisted Living

It is very rare when we visit to experience anything unclean. We have gotten to know most of the staff and they are all pretty friendly. The care they are giving my mother seems to be top notch. My mother does seem to enjoy a lot of the activities they have available. We do think Governor's Glen is a good value especially when considering other communities in the area.

Respite Care

I have been using Governors Glen for two years of respite care for my now 90 year old mother in law. Her most recent visit for two weeks was not up to our standards. Her clothes was lost plus other items and she was given a roommate that was not happy with the situation. After we got our Mother home we called and placed a complaint about the lost items, plus that fact she wasn't given breakfast that morning because she didn't want to get out of bed. There was no followup. So I decided to write a letter to the director. The apology came from the director.

My mothers care

I really do like know that the care here is great for my mom. She likes knowing that it is the same community when she is not at home to get care at home. The staff is wonderful. The meals are outstanding and she likes to participate in the activities. We would recommend this community to families who want good care.

It's nice, and mom is adapting well.

It's nice, and mom is adapting well. No major complaints so far. The food is very good, she loves the food. We had Thanksgiving there, and they had it set up very nicely, and the food was lovely, and it always smells delicious.
