Like with any other facility, visit often, keep your eyes, ears and nose open. Talk to the other residents and families. Listen to your loved ones. Stay involved. Avalon is a wonderful alternative to a nursing home. The model provides a comfortable space for loved ones where they receive the support they need surrounded by their things. Staff is trained but are often cold, removed and lack a caring/respectful nature we believe our loved ones deserve. Quality of food depends upon who is cooking.

Our Experience
I would recommend this facility if the family is going to be involved and frequent the home. It is clean. Staff: some are great- professional, empathetic and kind. Others are cold, unprofessional and run the house as if the residents are inmates. The 2 I am specifically speaking of are protected by management and my negative feedback was dismissed. The aide even saying my loved one was a liar. The move in was easy. Calls to family could be better. I have asked that they reach out to us any time there are issues or conflict with our loved one, if medication is running low. I have not received calls. As for the food: we are not allowed in the house during meals, our loved one complains about the variety and quality of food. Overly processed.

We made the right choice.
It's hard to believe it's coming up on four years since we had to find a place for mom, who suffers from dementia, but each and every day I feel fortunate that she's getting excellent care from the fine folks at Avalon House. I don't know how they manage, but they've kept her healthy and smiling all this time, even through Covid! She's got her own room, which was a must, that we decorated to make it feel like home and it's close enough that at least one of us can visit often. It's also a big plus that the staff knows her, and she knows them. I'm sure they're all good, but we're grateful to have found the house on Gelston Circle.

Good experience
My mom is a resident of another Avalon home where she is content and well-taken care of. I really like the staff, in particular the 2 staff members who live in the home, but I know we are lucky with this particular home! I like that this isn’t a wheeling and dealing type of facility- it is peaceful. Home cooked meals are also a major bonus.

As good as it gets normal people
It is hard to get information just because normally it is an open door facility, but right now they are shut down due to covid. Other than that the facility is clean, it is safe, and it is a good value for the money. It is a great place if your loved one is not looking to take advantage of all of the bells and whistles that some other places offer.

Like many of the facilities in our county, we do have modified visitation for the time being due to the increase in COVID cases. During this time, we have offered window visits, Zoom/tablet visits, as well as phone calls. We truly do understand this is not the same as an in-person visit. Should you feel you are not getting the information you would like to know about your loved one, by all means let us know by calling us or emailing us in the office. We do not know a family has an issue unless they tell us. The sooner we know, the sooner we can help. Someone from the management team would be happy to speak with you about this and work with your family as well as the caregivers at the home to ensure you are getting exactly the information you are looking for.
We truly appreciate your kind words shared, the feedback, and where you would like Avalon to do better while we have a more restricted visiting policy due to the rise in COVID numbers. We feel that it will be changing very soon, and you will be visiting in person with your loved one before you know it.

Community Tour
When considering a group home, it really depends on what you’re looking for. My mother would not have done well in a group home. Here there were four people sharing a bathroom. But it was a newer building. It had a beautiful view, and a new kitchen. It seemed like a beautiful house. They said they could provide a lot of care there. But it was concerning to me that two people living there full time would really be able to provide all the care for 6-7 seniors living in one house.

We are so pleased you liked the aesthetic of that home.
Avalon House is licensed for 8 residents and provides a 1:4 staff to resident ratio We also provide a 1 on 1 staff free of charge for the 1st three days a resident resides at Avalon House. Most facilities cannot boast that staff to resident ratio.
When full Avalon House on Gelston Circle has 8 residents. That home has 3 full bathrooms and 1 half bathrooms.
It is so important to take the time to tour as many communities as possible to find the right fit for your loved one. We are so glad you did that.

Be cautious
I would tell others looking that Avalon House has many locations, so I would check each one of them out in your area. The staff vary at each place, I would not rate the staff at this particular location high. Our family did not have a good experience here.

Like Being in a Cozy Home for My Loved One
I was thrilled with everything, except disagree with one staff member. I was able to speak to the owner and they were able to assist in getting the situation resolved quickly.
Compared to other options I considered, that were more expensive, I felt so lucky to find Avalon House.

Very Caring
They were wonderful, I would highly recommend Avalon House.They sent pictures to me of my dad, he looked happy. They answered all my calls quickly. He gained 9 pounds so he was well cared for and liked the food. They were quick to let me know when he started to fail and had great communication so nothing was a surprise.

Review of Avalon House
My experience with Avalon Homes was wonderful. My father lived in Avalon 10 which is a relatively new home on a quiet dead-end street in Mclean VA. The residence is modern, clean and very nice. The rooms are large and well updated. But most importantly, the staff is wonderful. The head nurse, [name removed], took great care of my father and I could tell that she really cared about him and all the other residents. He had considerable mental and health problems and none of that phased the staff at Avalon. My father was previously at a different care situation (name rhymes with Tunrise) and the Avalon Home was a million times better. Having dedicated, live in staff who take care of just a handful of residents means they can take a much more personal approach to each residents' care, and that really makes all the difference.

This place is in a very expensive Great Falls neighborhood with a bad house plan. Lower level with two bedrooms only reached by elevated chair. Lower deck (with steep cliff) is closed off. Upstairs is cramped -- one person sitting in LR, bedrooms off to sides. Cramped kitchen/dining area. No activities on site -- people have to go to government-run senior center. This place is so overpriced at $4,500.

Hello. I am so sorry you feel this way. You are correct we do not let residents go onto the deck that overlooks a steep hill on their own as that would be dangerous. We do 2-3 activities per day but they are not all day. I am sorry you had the experience you did.

My mother has been at Avalon House on Gelston Circle for about two months. She has some dementia, and after two falls needed a place with closer supervision than her large assisted living facility could offer. The home is lovely and the well-trained staff is very caring and attentive. It has given me peace of mind.

Beautiful home in a woodland area of McLean. Sunroom is glassed in and residents enjoy a panoramic view of stately trees, sky, birds, squirrels. Staff was welcoming; a full tour of the home was cheerfully conducted. House is well taken care of, very clean, safe and secure; residents have their own

I Loved Everything About Avalon House
I loved everything about Avalon House, from the owner and staff, to the houses, and the caregivers. The way they respect and treat people is excellent. After months of searching various other houses and communities, we finally picked Avalon House for our loved one, and it is perfect. Unfortunately, our loved one was only there a week before she passed, but while she was there, her experience was wonderful.
