Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Located on the banks of the Arkansas River at the foothills of the Ozarks, Tulsa is an all-American boom town located in the middle of the heartland. The city was once the largest oil producing city in America. This is reflected in the extravagant 20th century art deco architecture that was built during the oil boom. There are many opportunities in the city for those who love performing arts, being the home of the nationally recognized Tulsa Ballet and the Tulsa Opera. The largest performing arts center in the city is the BOK Center which has seating for over 19,000 people.

As one of Oklahoma’s largest cities, Tulsa is filled with many museums and other cultural attractions. The Philbrook Museum of Art is located in an Italian-style villa that was once owned by a wealthy oil magnate. The Gilcrease Museum houses the world’s largest collection of art depicting the American West. The Oklahoma Aquarium features eight permanent exhibits including habitats for invertebrates, Oklahoma species, Ozark species, a coral reef, and sharks.

Tulsa is considered by many to be the start of the famed Route 66 and there are interesting roadside attractions that are within relative proximity to the city. One such popular attraction is the Blue Whale of Catoosa located just outside of Tulsa. A popular destination for outdoor recreation is the Gathering Place – a large, public open space with a number of attractions including the Chapman Adventure Playground, a boathouse, outdoor sports courts, a wetland pond and garden, and numerous walking trails.

Transportation

Public transportation in the area is provided by the Metropolitan Tulsa Transit Authority which operates 21 regular routes and 4 night routes. The city has transit hubs at the Memorial Midtown Station in Midtown Tulsa and at the Denver Avenue Station on 319 Street South.
