Assisted living communities have the luxury of regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual care. The types of service offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In some cases, communities may provide skilled nursing care, continuing care, or hospice. The state of Wisconsin has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These include: standard precautions, medication management, resident rights, and fire safety. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include information and referral, transportation, health monitoring, and activity programming for persons with dementia. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled.
