Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care for people who need a helping hand with everyday activities such as dressing or showering. Assisted living communities usually offer outings for social activity, care supervision, and aid with appointments and transportation. In certain situations, communities may offer nursing, hospice, or dementia care. Wisconsin maintains specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: challenging behaviors, medication management, standard precautions, and job responsibilities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, including personal care, transportation, and independent living skills. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs.
