Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides care, supervision, and assistance to self-sufficient persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing, respite, or hospice. The state of Wisconsin has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, independent living skills, behavior management, and transportation. Staff must obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include resident rights, community policies and procedures, first-aid, and needs assessment of prospective residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system.
