Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities arrange residential communities and assistance to persons who may require support with things such as washing or self-administering medication. The types of service offered often include assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer respite, hospice, or dementia care. Texas maintains specific regulations related to this kind of facility. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living facilities regulates this facility type. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or direct administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living, general supervision or oversight, and personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents’ individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, facilities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident's physician must be provided according to the service plan. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include resident characteristics (including dementia), skills for working with residents, families, and other professional providersethics, food and nutrition services, and resident and provider rights and responsibilities. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, listing the medication taken on a resident's medication profile record, and assisting residents with taking medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program--called STAR+PLUS.
